The secret to high school senior Greg's success is to remain unnoticed and avoid forming deep personal relationships. This approach has helped him navigate the dangerous minefield of daily school life, with all its cliques and groups. Even his best friend Earl, with whom he's been making parodies and remakes of favorite films since childhood, is not referred to as a friend but as a colleague, because it's just... easier. However, Greg's peculiar strategy falls apart when his mother insists he spend time with his classmate Rachel, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Together with Earl, they decide to make a film about Rachel. This decision changes the lives of everyone involved, and Greg begins to realize the significant role friendship can play in a person's life.
